A sacred portal that translates the mathematical music of the cosmos into sound, light, and geometry — awakening the childlike wonder that knows the infinite universe and the infinite self are one.
Multiple wisdom traditions — separated by oceans and millennia — looked at the same sky and arrived at remarkably similar answers in different languages. The CSS makes that convergence experiential.
What it is
The Cosmic Sonification System is a large-scale immersive dome installation that translates real NASA orbital data through seven ancient cosmological wisdom traditions into spatial audio, sacred geometry projections, and live visuals.
Participants recline at the center of a 360-degree dome while the actual velocities, periods, and resonance ratios of the planets become sound, light, and geometry in real time. The same celestial mathematics that ancient traditions independently encoded into spiritual architecture — now made audible and felt in the body for the first time in a unified sensory experience.
The philosophical spine is musica universalis — the doctrine traceable from Pythagoras through Kepler that planetary orbital ratios are the mathematical grammar of musical consonance. The cosmos doesn't just move. It plays.
You don't observe the cosmos.
You hear it, feel it, and recognize it as yourself.
Live proof of concept
The working HTML proof of concept is live now. Enter any birth date, historical moment, or the current sky — the system calculates real planetary positions, scores dignity via Jyotish-derived logic, renders animated sacred geometry, and plays planetary frequency drones via the Kepler harmonic system. This is the engine beneath the installation.
Conceptual study
A conceptual study exploring the aesthetic register of the CSS — sacred geometry, planetary movement, and the spatial audio environment the dome will inhabit.
How it works
The system is neither a random generator nor a fixed performance. It is a composed score that plays differently for every moment in time — shaped by physics, interpreted by ancient wisdom, and given voice by a composer.
Real NASA orbital data provides the compositional input. Planetary velocities become tempo. Orbital periods become root frequencies via the Cousto Cosmic Octave method. Eccentricity shapes modulation depth. Kepler's intervallic ratios from Harmonices Mundi (1619) determine harmonic relationships between voices. The cosmos provides the score; the composer provides the language.
The interpretive layer between raw physics and human experience. Each tradition brings its own symbolic vocabulary — Sephirot as frequency nodes in Kabbalah, bija mantras as pitch centers in Vedic practice, the Kalachakra wheel as temporal structure in Buddhism. The Claude API functions as real-time translator, passing astronomical data through each framework to generate a compositional grammar personalized to any moment in time.
The astrological chart layer determines the "who" or "when." Any birth date, historical moment, or the current sky becomes the entry point. The dominant planet becomes the lead voice. The Sun sign sets the harmonic center. The Moon sign shapes the reverb character — a Water Moon drenches the space in cathedral reverb; a Fire Moon brings bright, percussive immediacy. Planetary aspects determine consonance and dissonance between voices. Greg Maloney is the composer. The cosmos is the conductor.
The planetary grammar
Each planet carries a root frequency derived from its orbital period via the Cousto Cosmic Octave method, and an intervallic relationship drawn from Kepler's Harmonices Mundi (1619). These are the voices of the ensemble.

Ancient wisdom frameworks
The convergence thesis at the center of the CSS: these systems independently arrived at the same answers from different corners of the ancient world. What does that tell us about the nature of human consciousness? The installation holds the question open. The participant discovers the answer through direct experience.
The framework set is intentionally open and evolving — designed to grow as the installation tours to new cities, each new tradition introduced through a dedicated public session with the cultural community that carries that lineage.
Sephirot as frequency nodes, Tree of Life as spatial geometry, 22 Hebrew letters as harmonic pathways through the dome.
Bija mantras as pitch centers, planetary yantras as sacred geometry forms, raga mood mapping to session emotional arc.
Solar barque journey as session arc structure, temple proportion geometry as visual mapping, Neteru as archetypal voices.
Wheel of time as temporal arc, Kalachakra mandala as dome geometry, impermanence as compositional structure — sound that arises and passes.
The direct 15th-century ancestor of this project. Ficino's actual planetary music therapy — celestial sphere hierarchy as spatial layering system.
Fool's Journey as session narrative arc, 22 Major Arcana as musical motifs, planetary associations mapping symbolic meaning to sound.
The most sophisticated astronomical calendar system of any ancient civilization — independently arrived at Venusian and lunar cycles within fractions of a degree of modern measurements. A natural fit for Los Angeles, given the large Mayan diaspora community and LACMA's Latin American collection. The CSS's first touring context is designed around this convergence.
Technical architecture
The working system calculates real planetary positions using Julian Day ephemeris mathematics, scores planetary dignity via Jyotish-derived graha bala logic, renders animated sacred geometry via a p5.js Vesica Genesis engine, and plays planetary frequency drones with Kepler-ratio harmonic layers via the Web Audio API. The full architecture map is live.
